Facilities

Hopkins Mountain Fireman's Cabin is available for reservations Spring through Fall. The cabin can comfortably accommodate 2 people on two twin single beds (bunk bed) each with mattresses. There is a tent pad located on site for sleeping another 8 guests. The group size is limited to 12. Guests and campers need to bring their own food, toiletries, towels, bedding and trash bags. A vault toilet is located at the cabin site. The cabin is equipped with electricity, refrigerator and heat. Be prepared to cook meals on the outside grill. Firewood is limited to what is dead and down within the area. Two picnic tables are provided along with a lantern post, fire ring, firewood shed and sawbuck. There is no water available on the site but drinking water, flush toilets, and showers can be obtained at Blue Bend Recreation Area from May to October. 

Natural Features

Hopkins Mountain Fireman's Cabin is located a short distance from Blue Bend Recreation Area where Anthony Creek provides opportunities for picnicking, swimming, trout fishing and hunting. The Blue Bend Recreation Area provides access to BIg Draft WIlderness, a beautiful wilderness hiking experience. Blue Bend Loop Trail is a 5 mile trail with 3 scenic overlooks and connects to Anthony Creek Trail which winds its way along Anthony Creek for 3.8 miles and provides access to the South Boundary trail a 4.8 mile though hike.

The Hopkins Mountain Fireman’s residence is located approximately 15-miles north of the town of White Sulphur, WV. From White Sulphur, travel on State Highway 92 for approximately 9-miles. Turn west (left) onto State Route 16 and travel approximately 4-miles. Across from the entrance to Blue Bend Recreation Area, turn onto Forest Road 139 (Hopkins Mountain Road) and travel approximately 4-miles to the circular turnaround and the fireman’s residence. The cabin is accessed by a single lane, steep Forest Service Road; while the road can be travelled by car, conditions can change quickly during adverse weather. Four Wheel drive vehicle are recommended.

Need to Know

  •  Check Out time is 11:00 am and Check In time is 3:00 pm

  •  Walk-in use is not allowed; reservations must be made via the Recreation.gov website or call center prior to arrival

  • No water available; campers must bring their own. Water and showers will be available at Blue Bend campground May to October.

  • Entry is by combination lock at gate and one at the cabin; confirm combination on your confirmation letter prior to arrival.

  • No pets allowed inside the cabin. If you bring a pet please clean up after them.

  • Cell phone is unreliable unless you are close to town.

  • Limit 12 people at site (2 in cabin 8 at campsite) and 4 vehicles.

  • No smoking allowed inside the cabin.

  • The cabin, because of the historical nature, does not meet accessibility standards. The outside amenities are accessibile.

  • Be prepared for emergencies. Note where the closest hospital is located and bring basic first aid supplies.

  • Snow and ice are possible on the access road in the spring and fall. Please check the forecast prior to your arrival or call the White Sulphur Ranger District for a weather updates at (304) 536-2144.

  • Be bear aware; keep all food out of site in approved containers or locked inside your vehicle and remove all food from area after eating
