Gifford Pinchot National Forest

Marble Mountian Group Picnic Site is on the Gifford Pinchot National Forest and is located at the Marble Mountain SnoPark on the south side of Mount St. Helens. Operated by the Washington State SnoPark program in the winter months, Marble Mountain Group Picnic Site is offered as a day use group picnic area during the summer months (April - October). This site is a great location for a family reunion, birthday gathering or outdoorsy group meeting. There is a 1000 sq ft. shelter built in 2019 that contains five heavy duty picnic tables and a wood stove for heating. There is no potable water availabe at this site. The shelter is wired for electricity if you provide your own generator. 

Facilities available include a 1000 sq ft accessible shelter with picnic tables and a wood stove. There is an accessible CXT vault toilet in the parking area. There is abundent parking for vehicles, and a bulletin board with information about the area. The area is gated closed to the public and only your group will have access to the shelter.

Natural Features

Marble Mountain Group Picnic Site is on the Gifford Pinchot National Forest and is nestled among the trees in the foothils of the southern side of Mount St. Helens.

Nearby Attractions

Marble Mountain Group Picnic Site is in the heart of southern section of the Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monment. Abundent wildlife is present in this area and just up Forest Road 83 is the Lahar Viewpoint, an interpretive site where you can view and learn about the awe inspiring power of the Mount St. Helens eruption. Douglas Fir and pine trees are slowly reestablishing themselves on the landscape devastated by the outflow (lahar) from one of Mount St. Helen's glaciers during the eruption. Other nearby attractions include the Trail of Two Forests, Ape Cave Interpretive Site - the third longest lava tube in the world, June Lake Trail and the Lava Canyon Trail.

Recreation

During the winter months, Marble Mountain is operated by the State of Washington as a SnoPark providing winter access to snowmobilers and cross-country skiiers. It is also the trailhead for the Worm Flows winter climbing route for Mount St. Helens. During the summer it provides trailhead access to the Worm Flow climbing route, a connection to the Loowit trail, and several loop trails that are also used by skiiers during the winter. Nearby trailheads include June Lake, Ape Canyon and Lava Canyon. It is also close to the Lahar Viewpoint along Forest Road 83. Ape Cave is also nearby and makes for a great family experience. The area is popular with mountain bikers who ride the Ape Canyon-Smith Creek loop.

Driving Directions

From I-5, travel east on state route 503 towards Cougar for 30 miles. 

At Skamania County line, continue straight on Forest Road 90. 

Turn left on Forest Road 83, Ape Cave/Lava Canyon. 

Continue straight for 6 miles. 

Turn left at signs for Marble Mountain Sno-park.
