Recreation: The Coldfoot Cabin offers visitors a road-accessible getaway during fall, winter and spring. This cabin is a great way to experience the far north outside of summer months. This is a primitive cabin with no electricity or running water.
Popular activities include cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, wildlife viewing, and aurora viewing throughout the winter months. Hiking is possible in the fall, before the snow is too deep. Commercial dogsled and backcountry ski tours are available in the area.
Firewood is not provided, and there is no cutting in the nearby area. The cabin driveway is plowed and shoveled approximately every three weeks throughout the winter, so access could be difficult after heavy snowfall.
Directions: From the city of Fairbanks, Alaska, travel north a total of 84 miles on the Steese (AK-6) and Elliott (AK-2) Highways to the Dalton Highway Junction. Turn right onto the Dalton (AK-11) and continue to milepost 175. Turn left (west of the highway) into the parking area. The Coldfoot Cabin is located on Airport road in Coldfoot.
Coldfoot Camp offers food, gas station and limited vehicle repair services.
The cabin is located approximately 250 miles north of Fairbanks. Expect a minimum drive time of 6 hours. Its a good idea to check weather and road conditions before departing town.
This cabin must be reserved prior to use.
You must have your permit with you during your stay. Print your email confirmation as proof of reservation or have it accessible on your smart phone.
Dog owners are responsible for cleaning up after their dogs.
Pack out your trash.
Please close cabin windows, outhouse door, and cabin when leaving.
The BLM strives to maintain tools and equipment in good working order, but visitors should be prepared to be self-sufficient. Cabin amenities include: wooden bunks, table & chairs, cooking area, woodstove for heating, propane cookstove, outhouse, broom & dust pan, shovel, smoke detector and fire extinguisher. (Visitors are responsible for their own travel arrangements and safety, and must bring their own required amenities not included at the cabin.)
The cabin does not have electricity or running water. Visitors must bring their own food, water, sleeping bags, sleeping pads, matches, utensils, toilet paper, first aid kit, 1-pound propane bottles for the cook stove, firewood, and trash bags.
The cabin is wired with lights and outlets which can be powered by a generator. A generator plug-in is located outside the cabin near the southwest corner. You must supply your own generator and fuel.
You must bring your own firewood. There is not a nearby area for cutting firewood.
Reservations: The cabin must be reserved in advance and paid for when you make your reservation. Stays are limited to three consecutive nights. Reservations cost $42 per night plus a rec.gov fee of $8, and may be made up to 45 days in advance. Reservations are from noon to noon. Weekends and holidays are times of peak use. A computer terminal will be available at the Fairbanks District Office for individuals lacking computer access to make reservations online.
The driveway and path to the cabin and outhouse are plowed approximately once a month throughout the winter, so access could be difficult after heavy snowfall.
The cabins are surrounded by vast amounts of public land you can venture on to and view the scenery around the area. The Coldfoot Contact Station is open on a limited basis in the winter and provides brochures, information and programs on northern Alaska.
