Located in the famous Outer Banks area of the stunning North Carolina coast, this campground is perfect for a beach getaway trip.

Facilities

Ocracoke Campground is only accessible by ferry or aircraft. Campsites are located on sandy soil, so campers are encouraged to bring extra-long tent stakes. Flush toilets, drinking water, cold showers, and grills are all provided for a more comfortable beach camping experience. The campground is conveniently located on the ocean side, separated from the beach by barrier dunes.

Natural Features

Ocracoke Campground sits on a barrier island along the Cape Hatteras National Seashore. The shore a recreational oasis for beach lovers. This ribbon of sand provides some of the most dazzling scenery that the Atlantic coast has to offer.

Recreation

The seashore provides a place for active recreation or for quiet reflection. Campers can visit a lighthouse, look for seashells, go fishing and clamming or just sit back and enjoy the peace and beauty of the white sandy beaches.

More active recreational activities include swimming, kayaking and windsurfing.

Bird and wildlife viewing is also a popular pastime for campers. The seashore provides a home and habitat for creatures large and small, on land and in the water.

Important Notices

  • Ocracoke is accessible only by ferry or aircraft. Ferry reservations may be required during peak season.
  • OVERNIGHT USE LIMITATIONS: Restrictions limiting the duration of camping will allow all campers to have the opportunity to enjoy camping in America’s first National Seashore. Established limits are designated to prevent resource damage and impacts to sites and allow for an enjoyable recreational experience.     • From Easter Sunday until the Sunday after Thanksgiving, all camping is limited to 14 days at each campground.

    • From the Monday after Thanksgiving to the Saturday before Easter, camping in Seashore campgrounds is limited to 30 days total.

  • Quiet hours are 10:00 pm - 6:00 am - Generators are allowed throughout the campground and must be turned off during quiet hours.

  • Wood fires are not permitted in the campground. Only charcoal cooking fires are permitted in a grill, stove, or other self-contained unit.

  • A fire may be ignited and maintained only by using fuel sources designed and commonly used for warmth or the preparation of food, such as charcoal briquettes or natural firewood. Lighting or maintaining a fire with other materials including, but not limited to, flammable liquids, garbage, fireworks, plastics, aerosol canisters, batteries, or other manufactured or synthetic materials, is prohibited.

  • All equipment must fit on the site pad. If you have a large RV over 25 feet, you may have to park your second vehicle in the auxiliary parking area just outside the campground or purchase an additional campsite. Vehicles may not be parked on grass.

  • At each campsite, there is a limit of six people, two cars (or one car and one trailer), and two tents.

  • Check in is 3:00 pm. Check out is 12:00 pm.  

  • After heavy rain there may be areas of standing water due to the low terrain.

  • Biting insects are prevalent in summer months. Netting and repellent are recommended.

  • Campsites are exposed and subject to weather extremes. There are no shaded sites.

  • Must be 18 yrs of age to reserve a site.

Directions

The campground is located off North Carolina Route 12, three miles east of Ocracoke Village and ten miles west of Hatteras inlet ferry terminal.
