Facilities

The rustic two-room guard station sleeps six people on three sets of bunkbeds with mattresses. Parking accommodates a maximum of one RV or trailer. The cabin has running water, a flush toilet and shower, but these are only available from approximately Memorial Day to Labor Day.

No electricity is available, but a propane refrigerator, lights and cooktop are provided along with a wood stove for heat. The kitchen also has a sink and a table with chairs.

Water is only available from late May to early September. Outside these dates, guests must bring their own drinking water.

Cooking and eating utensils are not provided. Other recommended items to bring include food, bedding, flashlights, toilet paper, garbage bags, dish soap and cleaning products like bleach or disinfectant.

Do not use the adjacent pasture for personal horses.

Natural Features

The cabin sits in a shady, wooded area in the valley of Greys River. Meadow Creek runs beside the cabin.

Moose, elk, eagles, and sandhill cranes are among the wildlife likely to be seen. An abundance of wildflowers color the landscape in summer.

The Bridger-Teton National Forest offers more than 3.4 million acres of public lands for outdoor recreation. With its pristine watersheds, abundant wildlife and immense wildlands, the forest comprises a large part of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, the largest intact ecosystem in the lower 48 United States.

Recreation

Greys River is nearby, offering pleasing fishing opportunities. Hiking, off-road vehicle riding, horseback riding and mountain biking are popular summer activities. Snowmobiling and cross-country skiing are excellent winter activities.

From Afton, WY, take Highway 89 north approximately 31 miles to Alpine, WY. At Alpine, turn right (south) onto Greys River Road (Forest Road 10138) and drive about 26 miles to Box Y Guest Lodge turnoff. Turn right (west), cross the Greys River Bridge, and then travel 1/4 mile. The cabin is located on the left (south).

Need to Know

  • 4-7 days prior to your reservation you will receive an e-mail with your cabin code, condition report and a rules and regulations page. Please read thru the rules and regulations page carefully. Fill out and return the completed condition report to the Greys River Ranger District following your stay. If you have any questions please contact the District Office at any time Monday-Friday, 8 AM to 4:30 PM (excluding weekends and Federal Holidays) at 671 N. Washington, Afton, WY 83110 or by phone at (307)886-5300. Check in time is 2 pm, Check out time is 11 am. 

  • Spring and fall access is not guaranteed and depends on weather and road conditions. 

    Winter access is by snowmobile only on a groomed trail.

  • In the winter no water is available, bring plenty for drinking, cooking and cleaning. 

  • You are responsible for cleaning the cabin, please leave it at least as clean as you found it or better. No smoking within the cabins is permitted.

  • No cell phone coverage or electricity is available.No cell phone coverage

  • Limit 1 additional RV or trailer at the cabin. 

  • Please bring garbage bags; this is a ‘pack it in, pack it out’ facility. Trash pickup is not provided; bring garbage bags and pack out all trash

  • Out-of-state horses must have a current Coggins test
  • Hay brought onto the Forest must be certified weed-free. Please remove any unused hay when you leave the cabin. 

  • Off-road vehicles are allowed on designated trails only. A Wyoming ORV or snowmobile permit is required for each vehicle. The permits and free Motor Vehicle Use Maps are available online, the District Office or Alpine Visitor Center in Alpine. 

  • Beware of poisonous chemicals used to control rodent populations

  • Bears frequent the area; keep all food out of sight in approved containers or locked inside your vehicle, making sure to leave nothing exposed.
