BACKPACKING CAMPSITE
The Laguna Meadow campsites are located approximately 3.5 miles from the Basin Trailhead via the Laguna Meadows Trail (or 6.8 via the Pinnacles/Colima Trails). LM-1 is along the same spur trail that leads to the Laguna West campsites. LM-2-3-4 are along their own spur trail just west of the Blue Creek Trail junction. Do NOT plan on finding these campsites in the dark.
The Laguna Meadows Trail is a gradual climb in elevation (1,600 feet). There are several sections of switchbacks. Views aer great and the trail is usually in fine condition year-round.
The Laguna Meadow Trail is the usual route to the South Rim from the Basin, since the climb (1,600') is more gradual than the Pinnacles Trail (1,700'). Consult with a park ranger about possible mountain lion or black bear encounters.
Laguna Meadows Campsite 1 (LM-1) has nice views of Emory Peak and surrounding Laguna Meadow area.
A solar-composting pit toilet is near the spur trail to sites LM-2,3,4.
This is a hike-in site. Parking is available at the Chisos Basin trailhead or the Chisos Basin Amphitheater.
Maximum 6 people, 2 tents.
Hammocks are prohibited.
Bears and other animals are frequently seen in this area. Always use the bear box at campsite, and NEVER leave any food or packs unattended.
No wood or ground fires permitted.
There is NO water available in the Laguna Meadows/West area. The closest water is at the Basin Visitor Center spigot. Always carry adequate water for cooking, drinking, and washing (suggested 1 gallon (4 l)/person/24 hours).
Pets are not allowed on trails in Big Bend National Park.
