- Caribou Island Cabin is a historic 14' x 17' log cabin thought to be built in the 1940's and restored in the summer of 2002. Located on the south side of Caribou Island on Tustumena Lake, this cabin offers seclusion, hunting, sightseeing, and wildlife viewing. The cabin contains two bunk beds, a table with benches, countertop for food preparation, wood stove, splitting maul, cross cut saw, broom, shovel, fire extinguisher, an established campfire ring, and an outhouse. In the winter there is cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and snowmachining. Contact the Refuge Headquarters (907-262-7021) for snowmachine regulations. Primary access to this cabin is by boat from the Kasilof River Landing, float plane, ski plane, skiing, and snowmachine. Refer to USGS map Kenai A-3. - The seclusion of this cabin necessitates being prepared to handle any emergency situation. Inclement weather may cause an unexpected extension of your trip.Tustumeana Lake is a large, glacial lake with recurring high-wave situations. Users must provide a U. S. Coast Guard-approved flotation device for each passenger transported on boats. The shore is exposed to southwesterly winds; large waves could swamp boats not pulled out on the beach. There is little beach area available during high water. Ice conditions depend on prevailing temperatures and are subject to change. Due to the size of Tustumena Lake, thick ice does not form until late in the winter season and the lake may reopen during warmer winter temperatures. Be familiar with ADF&G and Refuge specific hunting and fishing regulations. Bringing a personal cooking stove is recommended. Carry in potable water or boil surface water 5 minutes before drinking. Pack out your trash.
