The Big Indian Creek Cabin is a historic 16' x 16' cabin that was removed from its original site on Little Indian Creek and reconstructed to preserve its historical features on Big Indian Creek. Located on the north bank of Big Indian Creek, this cabin offers seclusion and the opportunity to explore the remote northeast interior of the Refuge. Wildlife includes moose, black and brown bears, and wolves. Hunting and trapping is allowed. In the winter there is cross-county skiing and snowshoeing. The cabin is surrounded by mature spruce and birch trees and the elevation is approximately 100 feet. The cabin contains one bunk bed, a table with benches, a countertop for food preparation, wood stove, splitting maul, crosscut saw, broom, shovel, water bucket, fire extinguisher, established campfire ring, and an outhouse. Access to the cabin is by wheeled airplane, 4X4 vehicle (no ATV's), or snowmachine. Contact Refuge Headquarters (907-262-7021) for snowmachine regulations. The operation of wheeled airplanes is at the pilot's own risk and authorized on the unmaintained Big Indian Creek airstrip. Mystery Creek Road is seasonally open for licensed wheeled vehicles as conditions allow, typically opening sometime in August and remains open through the fall. During the rest of the year, Mystery Creek Road is gated and closed to all wheeled vehicles. Please call refuge headquarters at 907-262-7021 before making a reservation to ensure the road will be open for access. Refer to USGS map Seward D-8.
