Need to Know
- Doroshin Bay Cabin is a historic 14' x 16' log cabin built around the turn of the century for use as a mining cabin and later used by early trappers and hunters. Located on the eastern shore of Skilak Lake overlooking Doroshin Bay, this cabin offers seclusion, hunting, sightseeing, wildlife viewing, and fishing. The cabin contains one bunk bed, a table with benches, countertop for food preparation, wood stove, splitting maul, crosscut saw, broom, shovel, fire extinguisher, an established campfire ring, and an outhouse. In the winter there is cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and snowmachining. Contact the Refuge Headquarters (907-262-7021) for snowmachine regulations. Access to the cabin is by boat, float plane, ski plane, skiing, and snowmachine. The closest boat ramp is located at Upper Skilak Campground off Skilak Lake Road. Refer to USGS map Kenai B-1. - The seclusion of this cabin necessitates being prepared to handle any emergency situation. Inclement weather may cause an unexpected extension of your trip. Skilak Lake is a large, glacial lake with recurring high-wave situations. Users must provide a U. S. Coast Guard-approved flotation device for each passenger transported on boats. There is little beach area available during high water and beach rocks are angular and sharp. Large, submerged rocks near the shore present a hazard to approaching boats and floatplanes. Winter travelers should use particular caution due to intermittent ice conditions and thickness. Ice conditions particularly near the Kenai River inlet depend on prevailing temperatures and are subject to change. Evaluate the ice thickness before traveling to the cabin and give the mouth of the Kenai River a large berth. Be familiar with ADF&G and Refuge specific hunting and fishing regulations. Bringing a personal cooking stove is recommended. Carry in potable water or boil surface water 5 minutes before drinking. Pack out your trash.
