Olympic National Park Wilderness Permit
Olympic National Park
Olympic National Park encompasses nearly a million acres, protects a vast wilderness with thousands of years of human history, and several distinctly different ecosystems, including glacier-capped mountains, old-growth temperate rain forests, and over 70 miles of wild coastline.
In December, 2016 Congress re-designated the "Olympic Wilderness" as the "Daniel J. Evans Wilderness" to honor Senator Evans' dedication to preserving our wildest places.
The Daniel J. Evans Wilderness is one of the wildest places left in the lower forty-eight states.
Notifications and Alerts
Road Closure – Hoh Rainforest and Hoh River Trail
Jefferson County is responsible for maintaining the Upper Hoh Road, which connects U.S. Highway 101 to the boundary of Olympic National Park. The county closed the Upper Hoh Road after it sustained storm damage in late December, 2024.
The county is currently in communication with the park to address the recent washout of the road. The park is preparing to restore safe access as soon as county officials confirm that the road is stable and safe for travel. These preparations include ensuring that rangers can provide emergency services, clean water, restrooms, and clear access to the roads.
- Until the road is repaired, vehicles, pedestrians, and cyclists will be unable to reach the Hoh River Trailhead. Permits for the area will not be available online.
- Backpackers may be able to access the Hoh River Trail via the Sol Duc Trailhead; however, this route greatly increases the mileage and difficulty of the hike and is typically impassable into July due to snow.
