The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Walter F George Lake Project issues on average, annually, five hundred hunting permits on a first-come, first-serve basis for eight designated management areas. The permits are subject to a $20.00 special activity fee that is assessed each season. Walter F George Lake Project Hunting Permits include permit number, name, pertinent State hunting license number. Hunting area maps and a copy of current hunting regulations may be viewed or obtained from the Walter F George website.
The Special Activities Permit Fee is assessed to cover the cost to manage the permit program and cover some costs to improve wildlife habitat around the project.
Permit & Season Information
This permit is for hunting on lands managed by the Corps of Engineers around Walter F George Lake for the 2024-2025 hunting season. The hunting season dates are according to Georgia and Alabama Department of Natural Resources which can be found at https://georgiawildlife.com/hunting/hunter-resources and https://www.outdooralabama.com/hunting. If accessing the lake from an open day use area, a day use permit or annual pass is required.
Need to Know
- A permit is required to hunt on Corps of Engineers managed property at Walter F. George Lake. The permit is valid till the end of July 2025. The state of Georgia manages four leased Wildlife Management Areas (WMAs) on the lake as well. - Hunting is permitted only in those “Hunting Areas” specified below in this regulation and, from boat only, for waterfowl on the waters of Walter F. George Lake. Hunting is prohibited on all Corps land, including islands that are outside of the specified “Hunting U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Walter F. George Lake Areas”, unless designated as a state WMA or certain areas of the Eufaula NWR.
- All state and federal hunting regulations and seasons apply in addition to Corps of Engineers regulations. Hunter orange must be worn (size prescribed by each state) while deer hunting in each state, including archery seasons. Hunters under the age of 16 do not require a permit, but must be accompanied and closely supervised by a responsible adult with a permit. It is the responsibility of the permit holder to be familiar with the Corps regulations contained herein, as well as any state and federal regulations as applicable.
- With the exception of state authorized alligator hunting, night hunting is prohibited on Corps managed property.
- With the exception of waterfowl retrieval, hunting with dogs is prohibited on Corps managed property.
- BAITING IS NOT ALLOWED ON CORPS MANAGED PROPERTY.
- Off-road operation, driving around a barricade, and the operation of any non-licensed vehicles, such as motorcycles and all-terrain vehicles, to include four wheelers, three wheelers, and utility vehicles (side by sides) are prohibited on Corps managed property. DO NOT BLOCK GATES AND ENTRANCES.
- No hunting or shooting is permitted within 300 feet (100 yards) of any dock, dwelling, business, church, school, recreation area, dam, powerhouse, public walking/biking trail or public road. Note: See distance requirements in section 18 for waterfowl hunting.
- Only climbing, ladder, or other temporary stands that are not permanently attached to trees are allowed. Stands must be removed from Corps managed property when not occupied.
- The Corps of Engineers property line is designated by 4-inch RED BANDS painted on trees or posts facing the property line. More information on this line may be obtained at the Corps of Engineers RMO in Ft. Gaines, GA. Permission to cross private property to reach adjacent Corps property can only be granted by the property owner.
- The possession of firearms is prohibited on Corps property, except as permitted for hunting purposes during authorized hunting seasons.
- Hunting or shooting air guns on Corps property is not allowed.
