The Garrison Dam was completed in 1954 and holds back the waters of the Missouri River creating the third largest manmade reservoir in the United States. The reservoir known as Lake Sakakawea is 178 miles long and up to 14 miles wide in places. The Garrison Dam itself is 2.5 miles long and 210 feet high and .5 miles wide at its base. The Garrison Power Plant is located directly below the dam on the West side.
The Garrison Power Plant is one of the many Hydroelectric Plants owned and operated by the US Army Corps of Engineers along the main stem of the Missouri River System. Our Power Plant is 522 ft long, 163 ft tall, and 134 ft wide on offers 5 power generating turbines that feed power to homes across multiple states.

You are entering a secure facility on this tour. State Issued or Federal Issued ID is required to be presented prior to entry for all individuals 18 and over. All individuals will be asked to sign in the logbook. All individuals under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult.
No bags, cases, parcels, cameras, cell phones, purses, backpacks, diaper bags, food, drink, or pets are allowed to enter the facility.
Visitors must wear close toe shoes to attend tours. Visitors must wear safety equipment supplied by the Corps of Engineers Tour Guide when asked, including but not limited to safety glasses, goggles, and hard hats.
Please wait for your tour guide to escort you inside of the secure gated area. Please wait outside of the entry road inside your vehicles parked to the side of the drive, until directed to enter by your tour guide.
Restrooms will be made available prior and after the start of each tour. Once a tour has started there is not an option to leave the group to take a break.

Individual and family walk-in Hydroelectric Dam Tours are running from June 6, 2024 through August 22, 2024
Walk In Tours are available on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays at 2:00 PM (CST) and on Saturdays at 10:00 AM (CST).
Booking Window Open 90 days prior to the tour and closes 1 hour prior. All tickets must be received during the booking window, no on the spot tickets are offered.
Energy Group Tours are available from June 6, 2024 through August 22, 2024
These group tours are available at a first come first served basis, on Thursdays and Fridays at 10:00 AM (CST)
Booking Window opens 90 days prior to date of tour and closes 7 days prior to the tour date.
School Group Tours are available from April 9, 2024 through May 31, 2024.
These group tours are available on a first come first served basis, on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays at 9:00 AM (CST) and 1:00 PM (CST).
Booking Window opens 90 days prior to date of tour and closes 7 days prior to the tour date.
Charges and Cancellations
• Garrison Project Fees: Garrison Project field office doesn’t charge any fees for power plant tours, but the R1S service does charge associated cling fees for use of the reservation service.
• Cancellation fees: The R1S service may charge associated cancellation fees, but the Garrison Project does not.
