THE TIME ON YOUR TICKET IS YOUR VISITOR CENTER ARRIVAL TIME. 'Going on a Cave Tour' is a 3.5 hour experience that begins at the visitor center.
First, check in at the visitor center (located at the bottom of the trail) at the time printed on your ticket.
Then, hike 1.5 miles to the cave entrance. Your tour ranger will meet you at the cave entrance.
Finally, enter the cave 1.5 hours after you began your hike.
Before arriving at the park, download tickets to your mobile phone or print at home. Cell service is minimal in the park.
Plan on 3.5 hours round trip for your visit.
ALL visitors are required to have a ticket, including infants.
Located high on the steep rocky slopes of American Fork Canyon in the shadow of Mt. Timpanogos in Utah's Wasatch Range are three limestone caves: Hansen Cave, Middle Cave and Timpanogos Cave. These exquisite caverns are decorated with an elaborate display of helictites, anthodites, and other formations in a variety of colors. Timpanogos Cave National Monument preserves these caves and their fragile underground wonders for you and future generations to enjoy.
The Timpanogos Cave System is accessed by hiking a strenuous 1.5-mile paved trail with an elevation gain of 1,100 vertical feet. After completing the 90-minute hike, visitors will experience all three caves on an hour-long ranger-led tour. The route through the cave is paved, lighted, and has several flights of stairs.

- Arriving at the visitor center 10-15 minutes early is recommended.
- Everyone must have a ticket, including infants.
- No refunds for late arrivals.
- Tickets should be downloaded to your mobile phone or printed at home before arriving at the park. Cell phone service in the park is minimal.
Ranger-guided Tour. Visitors enter Timpanogos Cave only on a ranger-guided tour. The park offers cave tours daily throughout the cave tour season.
- Advance Tickets. PLAN AHEAD. Purchasing tickets in advance is highly recommended. Cave tours are limited to 16 people per tour and tours sell out daily, especially on holidays and weekends.
- Tickets can be purchased online 1 hour to 30 days in advance. Tickets for tour times starting within 1 hour must be purchased in person at the visitor center (if available).
- To receive a refund, cancellations must be done at least 24 hours before your scheduled tour time.
BRING WATER. 1 liter of water per person is recommended. Afternoon temperatures reach over 100 degrees during hot summer months.
Cave Temperatures. The cave temperature is 45 degrees F (7 degrees C). A light jacket and sturdy shoes are recommended.
Accessibility. The cave trail and caves are NOT wheelchair accessible. NO strollers or other wheeled devices (including wheelchairs) are allowed on the cave trail or in the caves.- Infant Backpacks. Large metal framed infant backpacks are permitted on the trail but not in the caves. Soft infant carriers and small daypacks are permitted in the caves.
Pets. Pets are prohibited on the cave trail and in the caves. Service animals are allowed. Service animals-in training and emotional support animals are prohibited.
Food. Food, drink, candy, tobacco and gum are prohibited in the caves. Snacks are permitted on the cave trail.
Photography. Flash photography is allowed, but tripods and monopods are not.
Hiking Poles and Walking Sticks. Hiking poles and walking sticks are prohibited in the caves unless needed for mobility.
Flashlights. Flashlights are optional.
PACK IT IN, PACK IT OUT. There are no trash cans along the cave trail or at the caves.- WHITE NOSE SYNDROME. To help prevent the spread of White Nose Syndrome, a disease that is killing millions of bats in North America, the monument prohibits the use of any footwear, clothing or gear (including cameras) that have been in ANY other cave or mine at ANY time.
Booking Windows
Tickets are available to purchase up to 30 days in advance.
Additional tickets MAY become available every morning at 7:00am MDT and can be purchased either online at Recreation.gov or in person at the visitor center.
Tour tickets sell out every day so purchasing tickets in advance is strongly recommended.
Cave Tour Season
The Cave Tour opening date is determined by weather and trail conditions, both of which affect visitor safety. Safety for both staff and visitors is the parks' primary concern.
2024 CAVE TOUR CLOSING DATE-OCTOBER 18TH. The Cave Tour closing date is determined by unpredictable Fall weather patterns and how they affect end of season closing operations. Again, staff safety is the primary concern.
Changes and Cancellations
Cancellations must be completed at least 24-hours before your scheduled tour start time for a full refund less the non-refundable per-ticket reservation fee. Refunds will not be given for tours cancelled or modified less than 24-hours before the scheduled tour time.
